Teaching the Latin Ablative Case

Teaching the Latin Ablative Case

Over Winter Break 2k19, I made a new goal for myself to share more lesson plans with other Latin teachers. As an educator with no formal pedagogy training, I do not consider myself an expert on lesson planning and would love to see what other lesson plans look like— so I decided to start sharing my own!

My 8th grade class spent the past week and a half solidifying functions of the Latin Ablative case, and I decided to hold myself accountable to structured lesson plans (not required in independent schools).

The Latin Ablative Case might be my all-time favorite thing about the Latin language. Figuring out how words are functioning in a sentence is not only the beauty of the Latin language, it also teaches students to think critically and molds middle schoolers into scholars. Because I structure my class with high-energy activities, my culminating project was a Classroom Transformation (Pirates of the Mediterranean), during which students could show off their knowledge of the Latin Ablative Case. I’m hoping you learn of a new resource to implement in your own classroom, and feel inspired to share your lesson plans with others so we can do the same!
